Chief Mechanical Estimator

General Description:
In this position, the Chief Mechanical Estimator is responsible for leading a team of estimators in reviewing, estimating, and preparing mechanical quotes and proposals. You will utilize knowledge of construction projects and associated processes for technical aspects of projects to assure the highest level of accuracy and quality, anticipate risks and costs related to the technical aspects of the project. Collaborate in bid analysis, constructability reviews, performance standards, and specifications adherence. You should be detail-oriented and have strong knowledge of HVAC codes. Ultimately, an exceptional Chief Mechanical Estimator should be adept at reading building plans and demonstrate outstanding analytical and problem-solving skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with other divisions within the company on bidding opportunities to provided complete MEPF solutions to our customers.
- Communicate with company management on estimating/bidding/procurement strategies.
- Lead the company estimating scheduling.
- Mentor, train, and manage estimators as assigned.
- Analyzing blueprints to take off duct and piping with our bidding software by the team of estimators
- Determining the amount, type, and cost of materials and equipment needed for each mechanical project
- Determining the amount of labor required to complete each project
- Determining the potential profitability of mechanical projects to assist management in making sound bidding decisions
- Providing viable solutions Value Engineering (VE) ideas to increase project profitability
- Completing and submitting competitive project bids in accordance with established guidelines
- Regularly updating cost databases to accurately reflect fluctuating material and labor costs
- Evaluating labor and material costs to determine whether it is more feasible to construct mechanical components or sub-contract the construction of components
- Assisting the Superintendent and Project Manager with the overall plan for construction of an awarded project aligning with understanding and assumptions during estimating
- Communicating effectively with project manager and other project participants to provide needed assistance and technical support
- Assisting in the development of cost estimates of another department as may be required
- Soliciting and obtaining bids from subcontractors and material suppliers.
- Optimize job costs by negotiating prices from suppliers and subcontractors.
- Possessing working knowledge of various types/categories of projects and specifications as it applies
- Work with project managers and company management to evaluate post construction performance of projects as it relates to estimating strategies for future projects.
- Maintain good relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, and company personnel involved with various bids
- Utilizing company provided computer and various Microsoft applications to effectively communicate and accomplish task and functions as assigned
Key Competencies/Qualifications:
- Accountability – ability to accept responsibility and account for his or her actions
- Accuracy – perform work accurately and thoroughly
- Particular attention to detail, as an mechanical estimator needs to be highly detail-oriented in order to note all the details of a blueprint
- High analytical and mathematical skills which require an mechanical estimator to ensure that his/her calculations are accurate and correct to keep jobs profitable
- Sound organization and time management skills, as an mechanical estimator needs to ensure that he/she submits project bids on time, with the ability to maintain composure when multiple projects occur at once
- Communication – excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Conceptual Thinking – ability to think in terms of abstract ideas
- Experience with Trimble AutoBid would be a plus.
- Experience with estimating large commercial and industrial mechanical piping and sheet metal projects.
- Certification through the American Society of Professional Estimators (ASPE) is advantageous but not required
- Candidate must have 5-7 years of experience minimum, ideally 10+ years.
- Ability to work with Company computers and computer programs as they relate to the job
- Able to work well with other team members
Physical Requirements:
- Performance of the job may require sitting, handling items, and working with fingers to type, complete paperwork, and handle other administrative functions. Occasionally may be asked to walk, stand, talk, and hear others in conversation by phone or in person

- Ability to work possibly more than a 40 hour week to ensure bids and proposals are submitted when required.
