General Description

The Fire Protection Construction Manager is responsible for overseeing the sales, estimating, and design processes for fire protection systems in commercial, industrial, and institutional projects. This role combines leadership in sales, technical knowledge in fire protection design, and expertise in estimating and project bidding. The ideal candidate will ensure accurate and competitive cost estimates, lead the design of fire protection systems, and drive business development efforts to secure new projects.

Sales and Business Development:

  • Lead Sales Efforts: Develop and execute a sales strategy for fire protection services, including new business development, lead generation, and client relationship management.
  • Client Interaction: Act as the primary point of contact for clients, architects, engineers, and general contractors to understand project needs and provide solutions related to fire protection systems.
  • Proposal Creation: Prepare and present proposals to potential clients, outlining system design, scope of work, project timelines, and costs.
  • Negotiation: Negotiate project terms, contracts, and pricing with clients, vendors, and subcontractors.
  • Market Expansion: Identify and pursue new business opportunities within the fire protection construction industry, expanding market reach and increasing sales volume.
  • Customer Retention: Build and maintain strong long-term relationships with clients, ensuring satisfaction and repeat business.

Estimating and Project Bidding:

  • Prepare Estimates: Accurately estimate the cost of materials, labor, and equipment for fire protection systems, ensuring profitability and competitiveness.
  • Cost Analysis: Analyze project specifications, blueprints, and related documentation to prepare detailed and accurate fire protection system cost estimates.
  • Vendor and Subcontractor Coordination: Obtain and evaluate pricing from suppliers and subcontractors for necessary fire protection components and services.
  • Risk Management: Assess risks related to fire protection system installation, including compliance, safety, and scheduling challenges, and propose strategies to mitigate them.
  • Bid Submissions: Oversee and coordinate the preparation and submission of bids for fire protection construction projects.

Design and System Planning:

  • Fire Protection System Design: Lead the design and layout of fire protection systems, including sprinklers, alarms, and suppression systems, ensuring they meet code requirements and client specifications.
  • Code Compliance: Ensure all designs adhere to local, state, and federal fire protection codes and regulations, including NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) standards.
  • Collaboration with Engineers: Work closely with fire protection engineers and other stakeholders (e.g., architects, general contractors) to develop designs that integrate seamlessly with the overall building systems.
  • Design Review and Approval: Review and approve fire protection designs before they are submitted for client approval, ensuring that all aspects of the system are feasible and efficient.
  • System Optimization: Identify opportunities to optimize fire protection system designs for costeffectiveness, safety, and compliance.

Project Oversight and Management:

  • Project Coordination: Coordinate with project managers and field supervisors to ensure that fire protection systems are installed as per design specifications, on time, and within budget.
  • Schedule Management: Work with the project team to develop project timelines and ensure the design and installation phases are aligned with the overall project schedule.
  • Quality Assurance: Monitor the quality of installations to ensure that fire protection systems meet design specifications, safety standards, and industry codes.
  • Problem Solving: Address and resolve any design, installation, or client-related issues that arise during the project lifecycle.

Key Competencies/Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field. Equivalent experience in fire protection construction may also be considered.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in fire protection system design, estimating, and sales in the construction industry.
  • Certifications: NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) certification in Fire Protection Engineering is highly preferred. Additional certifications in project management or sales are a plus.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in fire protection design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, HydraCAD) and estimating software.
  • Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of fire protection codes and regulations (e.g., NFPA, local fire codes), system design, construction processes, and best practices.
  • Sales Skills: Proven ability to generate leads, negotiate contracts, and close sales in the construction industry.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for client interaction, proposal preparation, and internal coordination.
  • Leadership: Strong leadership skills, with the ability to lead a team of designers and estimators, and manage client relationships effectively.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to design effective fire protection systems and resolve project-related issues.
  • Organization: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, maintain accurate records, and meet deadlines.

Working Conditions:

  • Office-based with occasional travel to job sites.
  • Full-time position, with occasional overtime during busy periods.
