Safety Coordinator

General Description

Under general direction, the Safety Coordinator implements, manages, and monitors safety programs, policies, and procedures that meet OSHA and other applicable requirements. Evaluates the organization’s procedures, project sites and equipment by conducting inspections to identify unsafe conditions and to implement safeguards and solutions. A Safety Coordinator ensures the organization complies with all current regulations and that all employees are aware of safety requirements and are prepared to follow safety procedures. Collects data and reports on all safety and accident events. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists, plans and implements safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Department of Transportation (DOT)
  • Plans and implements training for employees in work site safety practices. Assist, set up and conducts training when appropriate
  • Develop Site Specific Safety Programs for projects as required
  • Administer job site safety programs and inspect to detect and correct safety hazards
  • Performs safety surveys and inspections, prepares written reports of findings and recommendations for corrective or preventive measures where indicated and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented
  • Track and trend reporting incidents and calculate injury frequencies for OSHA compliance as needed
  • Manage metrics reporting to onsite management teams i.e., GC’s CM’s and companybased reporting systems
  • Advises on safety compliance concerns and preventative actions
  • Conducts post-accident investigation and prepares report identifying possible accident causes and hazards for use by company personnel and senior management
  • Lead and/or encourage performance expectations for safe behavior to promote employee safety
  • Identify areas of safety concerns and improvements and develop action plans accordingly
  • Assists in the development, evaluation and upgrading of safety programs
  • Maintains safety files and records
  • Additional duties as assigned

Key Competencies / Qualifications

  • Accountability – ability to accept responsibility and account for his or her actions
  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university; or three to five years minimum related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and field personnel
  • Must have acceptable current drivers license and record
  • Prefer experience in OSHA, MSHA, DOT and EPA regulatory requirements
  • Excellent Computer, communication and training skills
  • OSHA 30 hour Preferred
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certified preferred
  • Minimum 2 years Occupational Health and Safety experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Performance of the job may require sitting, handling items, and working with fingers to type, complete paperwork, and handle other administrative functions. Occasionally may be asked to walk, stand, talk, and hear others in conversation by phone or in person
  • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined by management
  • Must be available and willing to work weekends and holidays as the employer determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs
  • Sedentary physical performing non-strenuous daily activities of administrative nature
  • Ability to communicate with people
  • Ability to work with Company computers and computer programs as they relate to the job
