Internal IT Specialist / Support Engineer
General Description
The Internal IT Specialist / Support Engineer is responsible for maintaining, supporting, and securing the company’s internal technology infrastructure. This position provides day-to-day technical support to employees while ensuring company hardware, software, networks, and systems remain reliable, secure, and efficient.
The ideal candidate is a service-oriented IT professional who enjoys solving problems, working with people, and taking ownership of technology-related issues. This role will work closely with employees across all departments to ensure technology supports the company’s day-to-day operations and long-term business goals.
Technical Support:
- Provide timely, professional technical support to employees for hardware, software, network, and system-related issues.
- Troubleshoot and resolve IT support requests through a ticketing system, phone, email, or in person.
- Diagnose technical problems and identify effective solutions while minimizing business disruption.
- Assist employees with computers, mobile devices, printers, peripherals, applications, and other technology.
- Escalate complex issues to appropriate vendors or third-party support providers when necessary.
System Maintenance & Administration:
- Install, configure, maintain, and update computers, operating systems, software, and applications.
- Ensure systems receive appropriate security updates, patches, and upgrades.
- Monitor system performance and identify potential issues before they affect employees or business operations.
- Assist with the implementation and maintenance of company-wide technology systems and applications.
- Maintain accurate documentation of systems, configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting solutions of systems, configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting solutions.
User & Access Management:
- Create and configure user accounts for new employees and departments.
- Manage user permissions, security groups, and access to company systems and applications.
- Administer directory services such as Microsoft Active Directory and/or Microsoft Entra ID.
- Coordinate employee onboarding and offboarding to ensure appropriate technology access is provided or removed promptly.
- Maintain appropriate access controls to protect company information and systems.
Network & Security:
- Monitor and maintain internal network infrastructure, including switches, wireless networks, VPNs, firewalls, and related equipment.
- Troubleshoot network connectivity and performance issues.
- Assist with maintaining company cybersecurity practices and security controls.
- Monitor for potential security threats and respond appropriately to security incidents.
- Help enforce company policies related to passwords, access, data protection, acceptable technology use, and cybersecurity.
- Stay current on emerging cybersecurity threats and recommended security practices.
Hardware & Asset Management:
- Maintain an accurate inventory of company computers, phones, tablets, peripherals, networking equipment, and other IT assets.
- Prepare and deploy hardware for new and existing employees.
- Coordinate repairs, replacements, warranties, and equipment returns.
- Maintain records of software licenses, subscriptions, warranties, and technology purchases.
- Recommend equipment and technology solutions based on business needs and budget considerations.
Backup & Disaster Recovery:
- Monitor routine data backup processes to ensure critical company information is appropriately protected.
- Assist with testing and maintaining backup and disaster recovery procedures.
- Investigate backup failures and coordinate corrective action when necessary.
- Assist in maintaining business continuity plans related to technology systems.
Vendor & Project Support:
- Work with outside IT vendors, software providers, and technology partners as needed.
- Assist with technology implementation, upgrades, integrations, and company-wide IT projects.
- Research technology solutions and make recommendations to improve efficiency, security, and employee productivity.
- Assist with budgeting, purchasing, and lifecycle planning for IT equipment and services.
Required Qualifications:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience providing technical support in a business environment.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Working knowledge of Windows operating systems, Microsoft 365, computers, mobile devices, and common business applications.
- Familiarity with Active Directory and/or Microsoft Entra ID.
- Basic understanding of networking concepts, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, Wi-Fi, VPNs, and firewalls.
- Understanding of basic cybersecurity principles and best practices.
- Strong communication and customer-service skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple requests and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to explain technical information clearly to employees with varying levels of technical knowledge.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience administering Microsoft 365 environments.
- Experience with endpoint management and deployment tools.
- Experience with cybersecurity tools and practices.
- Experience with network administration and firewall management.
- Experience with backup and disaster recovery systems.
- Experience supporting an organization with multiple locations or a large employee population.
- Relevant IT certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Microsoft certifications, or equivalent credentials.

Physical & Work Environment:
- Primarily an office-based position with occasional travel between company locations as needed.
- Ability to lift and move IT equipment such as computers, monitors, networking equipment, and peripherals.
- May occasionally require work outside of normal business hours for system maintenance, upgrades, or emergency support.
