Mechanical Engineer
General Description
Lee Mechanical is looking for a sharp, field-aware Mechanical Engineer with 5+ years of experience in commercial and industrial HVAC design. This is a design/build role — not a consulting engineer position. We don’t sell drawings to third parties. We create smart, buildable, and cost-effective systems that we install and stand behind ourselves.
As a full-service mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection (MEPFP) contractor, we rely on our in-house engineers to drive the front-end design and ensure performance on the back end. You’ll lead HVAC system design, help coordinate cross-trade efforts, and serve as a key resource for temperature controls, commissioning, and real-world troubleshooting. If you know how systems work in practice — not just in theory — and thrive in an environment where design and construction are tightly linked, this is the job for you.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design mechanical systems (primarily HVAC) for in-house design/build projects — with a focus on constructability, performance, and value.
- Coordinate directly with project managers, field leaders, and clients to align design with real-world needs and site conditions.
- Perform HVAC load calculations, equipment selection, and system layout using load calculation software.
- Produce coordinated construction documents in collaboration with CAD/BIM teams.
- Conduct field walks to assess existing conditions, support installs, and troubleshoot during commissioning.
- Interface with temperature controls contractors, assist in developing control sequences, and validate system operation.
- Support project teams during commissioning and turnover, helping ensure systems perform as designed.
- Stay current on code changes, technology, and energy efficiency trends relevant to mechanical systems.
- Assist estimating and preconstruction teams with system concepts and budget alignment.
Key Competencies/Qualifications:
- Must have at (3) years or more electrical experience.
- Knowledge of NEC and Electrical Theory.
- Ability to work independently with little or no supervision, as part of a team, and lead others.
- Strong communication skills.
- Knowledge of electrical codes.
- Clean valid driver’s license.
- Drug screening required.
- Experience reading drawings and blueprints a plus.
- Ability to estimate and write change orders a plus.
- Minimum OSHA 10, OSHA 30 preferred.
Who Thrives in this Role
- An engineer who sees design and construction as a single, integrated process.
- Someone who can bridge the gap between the office and the field — not just draw, but deliver.
- A well-rounded technical expert with a strong foundation in HVAC and working knowledge of MEPFP systems.
- Someone who’s comfortable in the weeds with controls, sequences, start-up, and troubleshooting.
- A proactive, communicative team player who thrives in a collaborative setting.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- 5+ years of HVAC design experience, ideally within a mechanical contracting environment.
- Strong understanding of field construction practices and how to design systems that get built right.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and industry-standard load calc software.
- Solid grasp of codes, ASHRAE standards, and multi-trade system coordination.
- Experience with temperature controls, system sequences, and functional testing/commissioning.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- EIT or PE preferred (or a clear plan to obtain).
- Valid driver’s license and ability to visit project sites as needed.
Physical Requirements
- Office-based with regular travel to active job sites.
- Ability to walk sites, review installations, and interact with field personnel.
- Must be able to sit, type, talk, and work with computer systems.
