The Lee Mechanical Horlick High School Project, in partnership with RUSD (Racine Unified School District) and general contractor JP Cullen, involves extensive mechanical upgrades to the school’s heating and cooling systems. This $15 million project, slated for completion by September 15, 2025, includes converting the existing steam heat system to hot water, adding a new boiler room to the north end of the facility, and replacing the south boiler room. Additionally, the project introduces two 250-ton air-cooled chillers, providing mechanical cooling to the entire building for the first time.

Project Highlights:

  • Steam to hot water conversion
  • Complete BAS (Building Automation System) upgrade by Low Voltage Techs
  • Introduction of chilled water to the entire campus
  • Extensive work in tunnels and confined spaces
  • Tackling unknown conditions in a 60+ year old building during the “summer blitz” periods

Lee Mechanical’s team, including steamfitters, sheet metal workers, and BAS techs, is overcoming significant challenges to deliver these critical upgrades on schedule.

“With most of the work needing completion during the ‘summer blitz’, we face the challenges of working in tunnels and confined spaces while navigating unknown conditions in a 60+ year-old building. This requires us to adapt and solve problems on the fly.” – Dave Van Duser, Project Manager
