A Day in the Life with Lexi Degroot

Lexi Degroot, Sheet Metal Journeyman

As a Sheet Metal Journeyman, Lexi Degroot works on large-scale commercial projects ranging from data centers to healthcare facilities. Her days start early with safety-focused planning and hands-on coordination in the field. With three years at Lee Mechanical, Lexi takes pride not only in her craft, but in teaching the next generation and helping her crew deliver precise, efficient installations.

I work on large-scale commercial projects, including data centers and healthcare facilities. These sites demand coordination, quality installations, and a strong focus on safety every day.

My day starts around 6 a.m. with a morning huddle. We cover safety, review the tasks ahead, and make sure everyone understands how the install will be completed. Throughout the day, we check in with each other to keep the job on track and ensure we’re doing exactly what needs to be done.

Teaching. Helping apprentices and newer workers learn the trade and watching their growth is the most rewarding part of what I do.

Since I work in the field, I’m using my hand tools and power tools throughout the day. Depending on the job, we also run equipment like forklifts or a lull when needed.

Lee has been a phenomenal contractor to work for. They provide the tools, training, and support we need to succeed, and the crew I work with has great chemistry. That teamwork helps us work efficiently and safely.

I wake up every day excited to come to work. I get to see different projects evolve over the years and take pride in contributing to each one. The variety and the hands-on nature of the trade are a big part of why I enjoy it.

I would definitely encourage them to do it. Speaking from experience, Lee gives us the tools, opportunities, and support we need to grow and succeed in the trades.

    Melissa Germait brings 12 years of industry experience to her role as Senior Project Manager at Lee Mechanical, where she oversees large commercial HVAC projects spanning mechanical, sheet metal, and mechanical pipe systems. Her project portfolio includes hospitals, healthcare facilities, schools, offices, and data centers across new construction and remodel work. Melissa manages the full scope of what it takes to bring complex mechanical systems to completion on projects that define the built environment.
